Anatomy Of A
Painting:
Taking a basic sketch from idea
to finished painting. You can click on the thumbnail picture to view a

While most artists have their own methods I would guess that the stages
laid out here will be common to most people's methods of working. Before
the basic charcoal drawing is prepared I usually consult various reference
works that I have built up over the years. This could be books, models
etc. Also obviously now there is also this vast resource called the
internet to be searched as well. |

The basic charcoal
drawing on which the demonstration painting has been based. |
 |
Having put a basic tint over
the whole canvas this shows the first rough application of the background
colours. |
 |
Continuing to establish the
basic colour of the water. Also the shadows that are cast by the clouds
have now been added. |
 |
Here the basic clouds have
been added, these may be refined if necessary later on. The basic colours
of the main subject aircraft have been blocked in and the background has
been refined with a little more detail. |
 |
The main subject aircraft has
now been finished with the exception of the smoke trail and the background
further refined prior to adding the other aircraft. |
 |
Just an additional bit of
interest, a close up of the main subject of the painting showing the pilot
preparing to bale out. |
 |
Here is the final painting.
Note that I have added an impression of more cloud in the bottom left hand
corner to break up what would perhaps otherwise have been an uninteresting
area of the painting. |
