Who's Online

Shop

Hello there and welcome to the John D Jones Web store. In here you will be able to purchase my self made body shells, purchase original Imageartwork by myself and also a limited edition print signed by myself and an American WW2 pilot.

Please use the menu on the right to access the relevant sections. The shopping area requires you to register again for your own protection so please fill in all details correctly so it doesn't cause problems with shipping etc. If you wish to purchase anything just click add to cart and when you are finished shopping you can check out using Paypal - you do not need a Paypal account to shop you can still use a debit or credit card.

Postage rates on Body Shells:

Please be aware that Body Shells are sent Recorded Delivery in the UK and International Signed for outside the UK. This is for two reasons, one it protects the buyer as it is track able and proof of delivery is available. This protects your purchase. I am not willing to send these items any other way. While the cost for one Body Shell might seem higher the cost factored in for the special shipping takes up most of this. If you are buying multiple Body Shells this is where it makes it more economical:

 1  2.80  5.45  6.20
 5  + 1.20  + 0.75  + 1.00
 10  + 2.45  + 1.35  + 2.00

So for example if you were buying 5 shells and you are in Europe the postage would be £5.45 + £0.75 =  £6.20. The way the shopping cart works currently I cannot make these multiple prices available BUT when you get to Paypal you can enter in the extra amount BEFORE you check out so please make sure you take care of this or it will delay your order and mean an additional payment by yourself via Paypal. Should you wish to buy more than ten shells please use the contact form here and let me know your requirements and I can let you know the cost involved for postage. Please allow up to 28 days for delivery, all items are sent extremely well packed to protect your purchase. If you want to make any other enquiries before placing an order please use the link to the contact form also.

Thank you,

Dave Jones

Some notes on the Body Shells

I have been building slot cars on and off now for over forty years with all my earliest cars having either my own carved Balsa bodies or, usually, using the then popular range of Airfix shells all using scratch built chassis.

It has only been over the past couple of years that I decided to build a few cars for which there were no readily available body shells so it was out with the wood and on with the carving.

As you will see from the body shells I now do I am primarily interested in Grand Prix/Formula 1 cars.

Depending on the complexity of the prototype producing a "master" model can take between one and three weeks and it was this single fact that resulted in my taking the step to mould each master so I could produce an infinite number of shells should the need arise to replace one due to racing damage.

The masters are carved from Jelutong which is a close grained wood with a guaranteed consistency in terms of hardness throughout each piece unlike Balsa wood which can vary dramatically even in a six inch length. Compared with Balsa Jelutong is relatively hard but can still be carved with an ordinary Scalpel blade.

The moulding material is a Silicone based rubber of a cured hardness that permits quite severe undercuts to be successfully moulded.

My body shells are made in the "traditional" way in that they are glass fibre rather than the more modern "slush" casting of a Polyurethane resin. I find that the conventional layup method results in better control of the shell thickness although it does take longer to produce a shell this way as two curing cycles are required.

When I begin my next project I will take photographs at each stage of the whole process from carving the master to "popping" the finished shell out of the mould. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words and when I do this I do hope that you will find it of interest.

Thank you for taking the time to visit this area of my site and please do call back to check on the latest updates.
