2007 UK 1.5 litre F1 Proxy Invitational
The 1961 to 1965 1.5 litre F1 period was a wonderful period in motor racing with many significant innovations, personalities and events a feature of the grand prix scene in the swinging sixties.
It was the era that marked the real shift towards the British based specialist F1 designer/builders with Colin Chapman leading the way but it also featured the patriotic BRM team’s heyday and it sewed the seed for many future smaller teams that would be such a feature of F1 racing in the late 1960s and into the 1970s and beyond.
This era saw the refinement of the rear-engined cars that had been introduced in the last couple of years of the 1950s 2.5 litre formula. All the pundits expected slower less entertaining racing with these smaller engined cars but great drivers including Jim Clark, Graham Hill, John Surtees and Dan Gurney intense racing and world championship title battles were ensured. There were still wonderful circuits almost unchanged since World War 2 and the cars were still resplendent in their patriotic racing colours. These lightweight “cigar tubed” cars combined increasingly neat and refined engineering and punchy V8 engines from Coventry-Climax, BRM and Ferrari. All this combined to push lap speeds way beyond the large front-engined cars of the 1950s.
Let’s hope that this proxy race series recaptures some of this spectacle and atmosphere.
This is a friendly event with entries by invitation.

Points Scoring
In keeping with the period, points will be awarded to the the top six finishers in each race: 9,6,4,3,2,1. If there are nine or less qualifying races only the best five results will count towards the total. If there are more than nine races the best six results will count. Tied results will be resolved by placings, etc.
Each race will feature a Concours parade (preferably a photo at each venue) but there will be no points awarded. OR Concours points will be awarded to the six "best dressed" cars at the beginning of the series 9,6,4,3,2,1. These points may count as one round towards the championship as described above. (NB. the points dropping structure would help give a well detailed but slightly less competitive car a bit of a "step up").
Each venue will be able to choose their own method of running races but ideally each participating driver would keep to a designated lane and drive every car once.
