Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/19 15:57 we found the tyres lasted the whole series last year I dont think this year will be different although we do have one extra round , my car needed a tyre change when I got it back but I ran a much softer compound to try and get the grip level up on what was basicaly a rigid chassis , this yrs car is quite flexible so a harder compound works well.

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/22 14:59 hi graham1, i really fancy Ecurie Martini,s p99 now it,s sorted. agree with you there. iv,e been having a think about the slot it gearing and will give them a try.but on last club night i had a look at another guys chassis and although built nice and light, he,d then laoded it up with lead weight.it occurred to me that having gone to all that trouble why not use a denser material for the front wheels and save some of the hassle? do you do your testing at home or on a club circut, just curious really on the descision to change tyre compound for this series. i have decided to start my project wiith a penelope pitlane in line chassis really a question of suck it and see! i read that it suited a track ie.wolves so will have some built in flex and use that as a starting point, before i get out the soldering iron and welding rod and do it myself.you are probably wondering why i,m askiing all these questions but info is hard to come by and i don,t want to look silly as i am as you know, a newbie. reguards peterjon.

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/22 18:28 With apologies for the delay in posting the report of yesterdays race but better late than never.

Myself, Derek Baker and Paul Elliott were the driver line up, we started the afternoon with a drink on the Earls Hall Park summerhouse patio.

To help in getting into the right spirit we did some research in some race reports from old issues of Motor Sport and Autosport.....

The front row consisting of Graham's BRM and my Ferrari 156 wait for the start of the first heat.

A shot of the cars in the esses at Earls Hall Park.

Dave Jones lovely BRM at speed on the pit straight. You can make out the build up of Ortmann dust in the two lanes.

We judged the concours before the start and I would definitely say this years standard has progressed from last years cars, there are some jewel like constructions in the entry list.

The race comprised four 20 lap heats with all the cars racing on both lanes twice. The results table shows the total running time for each car over the 80 laps.

The cars generally got around the circuit very well, I had cleaned the conductor rails beforehand and hoovered and all the cars were quicker than in practice as a result. There were some great dices but sadly there were also some nightmare heats which has resulted in a couple of the cars appearing lower down the order than expected.

The moment of the day was when Mac's Ferrari clipped the scenery at the back of the paddock while accelerating flat out onto the main straight, we are not sure how it happened but it managed to perform a spiral "victory roll" back into its slot and barely lost a tenth of a second on that lap!

Congratulations to Graham for his victory, his car is just so driveable. Al's Ferguson performed superbly and never missed a beat as it raced to its excellent second place. All it needs a grease up and its ready for the next race. Mac's car performed really well after its slow practice time and pushed the Ferguson hard but settled just a few seconds behind for its third place.

All the cars ran reliably and live to fight another day.

David

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/22 18:34 my brm started life as a PP chassis they are totaly rigid no flex at all ,thanfully it now works properly . I had to cut it in two fit flexy rails solder all the joints add a base plate lengthen the guide lead and change the way the front axle mounts other than that it standard!!!!!!!!!!!!.If I d have bought it Id want a refund ,personaly I think there rubbish and only suitable for home racing quite a few have been raced at wolves but none have ever been on the pace of a "real" slot car I have a large carrera home track with grip that is similar to a good wod track ,its painted with flat grey ,
I used to race at pendle but I havent been there for over a year .Im planning a routed track for when we go back to live in greece as I have a lot of space over there and I can have it set up outside for most of the year .

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/22 20:04 hi grah1, wonder if the info i read was by way of a promo for the chassis.my word, you certainly went for broke on the mods.precious little left of the original.i love greece spent many years holidaying there when my wife was alive. always said i,d retire there, but when she went so did the spark. used to stay in glyfada, near the air port.easy to travel around from there.i am a bit of a historical/classical nut. i have family by marriage in tuscany also so always used any visit to go to modena and visit the ferrari works and museum. did,nt ecurie martinie p99 do well.did you get a few bob on it .congratulations on yet another victory for yourself can you be caught on points.? this years proxy eventhas got to be the best ever,so good for the hobby. regards peterjon.

I always knew Mac's car was going to perform better in the race, for some reason it just didn't go well in practice. Jim's car also had no grip in practice but come race day it went very well. Jim was just so unlucky with sevearl deslots that cost him chunks of time in his heats.
Your Brabham was a popular car, it "looks" absolutely right as it circulates the track and it only just finished out of the points

Peter
I don't know about the over excited Murray Walker, my memories of 1960s grand prix TV broadcasts are of the measured tones of Raymond Baxter.

There are several cars in the field that are almost extremely good slot cars and I'm sure that if their owners were at the tracks and carrying out fine tuning tweaks they would gain a good bit of speed. It really is hard to score points in that tightly bunched midfield pack.

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/24 00:30 I posted this in the wrong thread - put it down to overwhelming excitement:

Actual points scored! I am ecstatic. All credit to Graham's rescue (and to my other friends who found the time to enrich Her Majesty's Post by shipping my erstwhile "kit car" thither and yon).

While under normal circumstances I would have been happy to move up a spot, in this case, I am very content with the results. It would have been the grossest sort of poetic injustice had Graham's good offices resulted in such an outcome.

I am really enjoying this - all the pleasure of building the car, all the excitement of the races without the nail-biting anxiety of wondering when my own lame driving is going to make a mess of it.

(actually hoping for a better result in our local series this year - had successful lens replacement cataract surgery this summer and I can now actually follow a car all the way around a track without multiple re-focusings through tri-focal glasses)

On to the next round
