Re:2008 Round Three Midford Combe - 2008/08/16 22:43
Thanks John for your comments and your company!.........
Graham, I'll try to take some photo's but 1) It's difficult in the shed to get an overall shot of the track, 2) I still have difficulty posting photo's on here, but I'll have a go.
Today I had the chance to get some driving in on these cars, and what a priviledge it was.
The comments are in no particular order and are pretty random in nature, but you might find them useful.
Car #6 - Ferrari - David I could tell straight away without looking it was one of David's cars, superb to look at, very smooth and quick. It did deslot a fair amount from the front and usually on the downhill adverse camber bend!...I think the problem lies in the guide and the motor wires. They look a tad (sorry), short and stop the guide turning as it should. The car also has limited brakes and tends to tip on corners if driven enthusiastically. Lap times around 4.4 seconds.
Car #7- Ferrari - Joel Very smooth and quick car that handles very well and is a delight to drive. Unfortunatly it has almost zero brakes. I think with more "suitable" gearing this car could be a contender for honours here. Lap times around 4.3 seconds
Car #8 - Brabham - Jay Stunning car that drives as good as it looks. Smooth and fast with just a hint of gear noise. Average brakes. The car suits my track and should do well in the race. I have to say I don't like the way the crown gear is visible from above, it does, in my opinion, detract from the overall appearance. Lap times around 4 seconds
Car #12 - lola - Jim Uktra smooth car, very quick and with very good brakes. Again the car tends to deslot on the downhill bend on my track, again due to problems with the guide which catches on the bodywork on tight bends. Lap times around 4 seconds
Car #9 - BRM - Dave Great looking car, asyou would expect from Dave. The car is quick but a little hesitent in some corners. I tracked down the cause of this problem to the long braids shorting out on the front steering arm.The car is fairly smooth but has zero brakes. The car also deslots on the downhill bend. I seem to remember Dave's ATS from last year, did the same thing. It seems to be steering related as when the car is pushed the inside wheel seems to "tuck under" and throw the car from the slot...it may be that I'm not used to driving steering cars, but it does mean you have to slow downconsiderably to take this corner. Lap times around 4.4 seconds
Car #13 - Ferrari - Alexis Poor old car has certainly been in the wars, and has now lost a bit more of it's nose!..Sorry Alexis. The car is not very smooth and dosen't accelerate very well. It does have good brakes and is fine in corners up to a point and then it will suddenly brake away and tip with no warning. The tyres also don't seem to grip very well, and they are fitted the wrong way round..... I think part of the problem is the guide which is very shallow and the braids which are very thick. A Slot.it or TSRF guide would transform the handling. The car also had an alarming tendancy to "leap" over the dead strip on my track which is the Lap Counter!. Lap times around 4.5 seconds
Car # 17 - BRM - Bryan Fantastic car!...Very quick and ultra smooth. It has limited brakes but that doesn't really matter as the car handles so well. Braids are a little thick and performance could possibly be improved with a thinner variety. Lap times around 3.9 seconds
Car #11 - Cooper - Paul Very good all round car, with superb looks. Handles very well and has average brakes and grips. Lap times around 4 seconds
Car #2 - BRM - Charlie Very smooth and exceptionally fast car. Handles pretty well but does not like rapid changes of direction , (such as the "esses"). The car rewards careful driving but is not easy to lap in a consistant manner. Lap times around 3.9 seconds
Car ? - Ferguson - Al What can I say about this car. Tremendous engineering employed in the build with beautiful bodywork. Unfortunatly it is very slow, noisy (not surprising with the number of gear transfers) and also tends to lock up the rear wheels on over run. I understand a pack is on route from Dave to sort out some of the problems. Lap times around 4.9 seconds
Car #10 - BRM - Graham Fantastic car, very fast, smooth and almost impossible to deslot. This car will do 3.8 second laps all day long. The most noise from the car comes from the front wheels, which sound just like Phil Kalbfel's Derilin shod Proxy cars. If I had to choose one car from this collection to own, it would be this one. Lap times 3.8 seconds
Car #3 - BRM - John Another great looking, quick and smooth car, but has limited brakes, but as it handles so well it doesn't cause a problem. An easy car to lap consistantly. Lap times 3.9 seconds.
Driving impressions of Mac and Bill's car to follow when they arrive, although obviously Bill's Porsche doesn't look as good as mine!....
I can rectify some of the points mentioned in the above comments(such as Dave's braids), if I am allowed to. Please let me know.
Thank you guys for the enjoyable morning you gave me.
Regards
Alan
