Testing ahead of Round Two - 2008/08/01 17:16 Following on from the repairs and general cleaning/checking, I have put each of the cars through it's paces around the Valley Raceway. I ran each car until I felt that I couldn't significantly improve on the time. Here are the best laps I recorded:

1 Bryan's BRM - 4.12s

2 Charlie's BRM - 4.13s

3 Graham's BRM - 4.15s

4 John's BRP - 4.25s

5= Jay's Brabham 4.28s

5= Joel's Ferrari 4.28s

7 Jim's Lola 4.34s

8 Paul's Cooper 4.35s

9 David's Ferrari 4.42s

10 Alexis' Ferrari 4.45s

11 Dave's BRM 4.46s

Absent friends were Mac, Bill and EM of course.

The spread of times is closer than at this point last year so it looks like we're in for some very competitive racing come Wednesday evening. Of all the cars, Graham's stood out in that it was very consistent and almost impossible to de-slot even when throwing it through the usually unforgiving esses section. Having said that, victory isn't a forgone conclusion as the car has near-peaked (motor has lower revs than most) whereas the others may well pick up a couple of tenths as the track continues to bed in...

Re:Testing ahead of Round Two - 2008/08/01 18:46 John,

Great report. The field definitely seems to have come closer together this year. Looking forward to the full race report next week.

I also decreased your karma. I assure you it was not because my car was not the fastest. I clicked on the thumbs to see what they were for and unfortunately I can't correct it for another 6 hours.

But rest easy, I'll bump you back up tonight.

Jay

Re:Testing ahead of Round Two - 2008/08/02 14:32 Now that Jay has finished messing with my karma , here are a few pictures of EM's Ferguson which arrived (via Dave) at the Valley Raceway earlier today:

As you might expect given the construction, the car has a very distinctive feel with solid handling and good braking... or, so it seemed until lap 3 when I was alarmed to see the car appear to accelerate under braking towards the end of the main straight!

Well, the contrate gear had come loose and although the car survived the barrier unscathed, this seemed like a reasonable excuse to take off the shell and have a look at the mechanicals

...beautiful detailing and impressive engineering.

I re-tightened the gear, popped the shell back on and off we went again. I was gaining confidence and starting to push the car quite hard but again the contrate came loose leaving the car revving motionless, this time at the bridge exit and out of harm's way .

EM, I think this is likely to be an ongoing problem. Would you object to me placing a drop of Loctite lock 'n seal (blue) on the grubscrew and axle to see if that sorts it out? I think that may suffice although any other thoughts would be welcome of course.

Kind regards
John

Re:Testing ahead of Round Two - 2008/08/03 04:53 John:

By all means, stick the little bugger in place via whatever means you think best. The only suggestion I will offer is that if you position the right hand rear wheel so that the dot on the inside of the wheel is at 9:00 O'clock as you are looking at it, the flat on the axle should be facing up and horizontal.

It would probably be best to flush out the gear with some solvent so that the locktite has a clean surface to grip.

I really should have built another gear - the hub is a bit too short and, as I am certain that you have noticed, it is hard to get the wrench firmly seated in the grub screw.

Thanks for your expert assistance.

Al

Re:Testing ahead of Round Two - 2008/08/03 06:22 Al,

Beautiful car. The detailing is superb and I love the faux wheel drive!

Re:Testing ahead of Round Two - 2008/08/03 19:02 Thanks for the reply EM. Yes, I did notice how tricky it is to get at the grub screw!. I have replaced it as I was concerned that the socket was becoming worn with the repeated tightening and loosening.

The good news is that the contrate gear is now firmly seated and hopefully will stay put.

Unfortunately we have a new problem

I had put in around 20 laps when I thought the contrate was slipping again under acceleration on the main straight. A quick look underneath revealed that it was still secure so I put in another lap and the same thing happened. On removing the body it was apparent that the motor pinion had stripped You can see it here:

Compare the main body of the gear with its unworn end (nearest the camera).

Unfortnately I don't have anything suitable in my "bits box" to replace it with but Graham may have. Otherwise it will have to be mashed banana skins between the gears!

EM, can you give us any more info regarding the pinion please? It looks like 11T but what is the pitch and how is it fitted: push on, glued, soldered, etc.?

Graham, as you will have gathered I've had more no wheel drive than faux wheel drive so I couldn't say how the motors compare for now.

Kind regards
John
