Re:Cars for the 2008 event. - 2008/04/25 21:46 Re Jims question on the new ortmans ,we have had some discusion on slot forum over the changes ,the conclusions are a bit mixed but general veiw is theres not much difference between the old and the new I wold suggest carefull truing then polish with the finest wet or dry and you should get comparable traction Ive also found that treating ortmans with one of the anti viral "dry" hand cleansers such as made by swarfega or cuticura is beneficial .What surface have you been testing on Jim .The surfaces here ar varied but all offer good traction .

Re:Cars for the 2008 event. - 2008/04/26 00:34 Graham,

Thanks for the information on getting the best from Ortman tires. I have tested them on Carrera plastic track as well as on wood. Traction was not at all good on Carrera, but better on wood. In both cases the older version was much better. I'll make a trip to the pharmacy for some dry hand cleanser.

Thanks,

Jim

Re:Cars for the 2008 event. - 2008/04/27 20:24 Hello Everyone,

Here's a look at my progress on the Lola F1. I'm still thinking about engine details.

Re:Cars for the 2008 event. - 2008/04/28 10:23 The Lola looks beautiful Jim and I look forward to meeting it in the flesh.

I mentioned eariler in the thread I wasn't sure which version of the Lotus 25 to build for the proxy but I finally opted for the car when it appeared at Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix. A couple of reasons for this, I like cars in their original form before they are race developed as the designer originally imagined and designed them and of course the 25 literally shocked the racing world when it appeared so it's nice to build that version. I don't think the Lotus 25 ever looked more sleek and elegant than when it first raced.

As Jim has just mentioned it is a bit of a question as to whether you add engine detail. Here is my car now I've added the engine intakes, transistorised ignition box and those two pieces of the manifolds peeping through the very rear of the engine cover. I might be wrong but I think it was only on the Dutch car they did thid and afterwards they re-routed them slightly and did away with that small opening. It is all a bit academic as most of it will be covered up by the gauze screen soon anyway...

I am fasinated by your suspension detail! Any further pictures would be appreciated. And what are you using for springs on the rear shocks. I believe you once mentioned Nylon threaded screws---is this (Lotus 25) an example of those screws? Thanks for your time and the time the others have taken to make thier cars and pictures available!

I'll take a picture explaining the suspension and post it shortly.
In the meantime the rear springs on the Lotus didn't go according to the original plan.
They are actually 2mm brass bolts which I cut to length and soldered a bit on the end to locate into the bodywork, the idea was to paint them black then dry brush the thread in silver to give the impression of the spring. Because I lost some of the detail where the solder filled part of the thread I ended up wrapping fuse wire round them to replicate the spring. It would in hindsight have been easier to just use piano wire or brass rod which I could have bent to shape and done away with the need to solder - I'll know for the next time!

I hope these pictures show the suspension more clearly.

The lower wishbone and radius rods are soldered to the chassis and all the other pieces are attached to the bodyshell.

Re:Cars for the 2008 event. - 2008/05/01 15:01 Great looking cars David and Jim. That's a lot of detail on some very small shells. I've got a lot of catching up to do.
