Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2007/11/26 19:51 With the Lotus 18 having just returned from this years proxy series I thought it might be a good time to update the thread. This of course was modelled on the Camoradi car campaigned by Ian Burgess during 1961:

Next, the Lola Mk 4 from 1962 as driven by Roy Salvadori and in which he concluded his F1 career:

This Nurburgring car gave me the opportunity to make some subtle changes to Dave's standard shell including the non-vented engine cowling and exposed exhausts.

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2007/11/27 20:38 Hello,

this is my first post on here. most of the members know me and have probably seen my scratchbuilding efforts, if not here are my Dave Jones bodies cars.

these are both Iso Grifo A3/C, my favourite car of all time. the top car raced at Sebring in 1964 (raced by me at Wolves last year and the Southend summer Classic) and the red car raced at Sebring 1965 (raced by me at Bordeaux 2006)

hope you like them

Pete

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2007/11/28 15:37 Hi Pete

Thanks for posting your photos and a warm welcome to the forum.

The pictures appear on the small side but you might notice that when you post an image it is automatically sized to 150 pixels across. So if you edit your post, where it says:

"img size=150"

change it to say 550 (the optimum size for this forum I think) and it will appear that size.

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2007/11/28 19:23 Hi Pete,
Thats done the trick!
I can now see your lovely 'Bitsas' without my specs!
Does Dave still make this shell? I would like one of these myself.
Kind Regards Bill

It's nice to see you've joined our little happy band of slot car enthusiasts here on Dave's excellent website. Your modelling skills and enthusiasm will be most welcome.

It's great to see your two superbly built Iso Grifos in this thread, I remember them well from the Summer Classic.

Whilst I'm on, just to remind you that I have your F1 Proxy Airfix BRM safe and sound after the final round at Wolves.

David

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2007/11/29 11:35 Hi Pete,

A very warm welcome to "our" Forum and please do feel free to post more photos/descriptions of your lovely models.

What an excellent job you have made of ,what is in reality, a "Pig" of a body shell.

For those of you with long memories, I did the Iso Grifo A3C Le Mans car a few years ago just to have something different for one of the Wolves Le Mans events.

Bill, this shell is no longer available. Pete had the last two out of a very dodgy mould ( it was an absolute nightmare to lay up for some reason) and the mould no longer exists.

All the best for now.

Dave

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2007/11/29 19:54 Dave,
Thats a shame about the mould, it would have made a nice addition to your body inventory.
Perhaps one day you will 'gird your loins' and have another go!
Kind Regards Bill.

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2009/02/12 11:49 Hi All,

Finally I have finished my first car (in about 20 years) from the shells I bought from Dave over a year ago. I'll blame the delay on a very disrupted work year!

The next advice that I need is how to take a close-up decent photo.

My 1:1 subject was Maserati 250F #2508 in its second-last New Zealand livery. This was when it was owned and driven by Johnny Mansel (one "l").

I can't get over the incredible quality and detail in Dave's shells. Such a pleasure to work with.

Next up is a Lotus 16 in David Piper's colors as he raced it in NZ. But I do have a question for all you master-modellers on this forum... what do you use to attach your windscreens? On the 250F I used superglue which ran a bit and crazed the screen in places. the Lotus is ready for its screen so I thought I'd ask the question before I blow another one.

Cheers all, Peter

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2009/02/17 20:34 Hi Peter,

Great job on the Maserati. I haven't seen that livery. I use a glue by Testors here in the states that's made specifically to glue clear plastic as it dries clear.

Looking forward to seeing the Lotus 16 as well.

Kind regards,
Jay

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2009/02/25 11:36 Thanks Jay.

I was able to get that Testors clear cement in Hong Kong... so here are some pictures of the just-finished Lotus. As I said, David Piper colors from the 1960 NZ season. If you go to http://www.sergent.com.au/1960.html and scroll down you'll see a picture showing the Lotus in about 4th and the 250F behind it about 7th. This site is a mine of information and pictures from "the day" in NZ when I was a boy. Aaah, memories......

The screen is a better effort on the Lotus than the 250F, but I still think I need a master-class in cutting and attaching said items. I was surprised to see the color difference and lines around the BP decals in the photos. I had been very happy with the apparent lack of both to the naked eye. But the camera doesn't lie like my eyes do!

Anyway..... have a look....

And here's one with its big brother

So this is how I while away the weekends here in China.

Cheers all.... Peter
