Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2006/08/19 23:36 Now that Dave has a new forum for Slot Car Modelling & Racing, I thought I would take this opportunity to post some pictures of models I have built using his fine fibreglass shells.

Lotus 18
Dave made a superb job of his Lotus 18 body shell. Here is my model finished as Stirling Moss' US GP winning car from 1960.

BRM P25
The P25 is one of my favourite cars and accordingly I have built two! The first is modelled on the pale green painted British Racing Partnership entered car driven by Stirling Moss' at the 1959 British GP:

The second is Jo Bonnier's Zandvoort car, the Dutch GP being significant in that it was the first Grand Prix victory for the BRM marque:

Mercedes 300 SLR
This is another Stirling Moss car. Following an epic struggle with Mike Hawthorn's Jaguar and despite a thrown tyre tread damaging the rear bodywork, Stirling headed up a 1,2,3 Mercedes victory at the 1955 Dundrod TT.

Alfa Romeo Bi-motore
This model represents the car as raced by Tazio Nuvolari at the Avus-Rennen in 1935:

Iso Grifo A3C
Perhaps one of the most stylish GT cars ever, the A3C is finished here as the Noblet/Berney Le Mans car from 1964:

Mercedes W154
One of the most brutal yet beautiful racing cars ever built. This model is finished to resemble Manfred von Brauchitsch's 1938 French GP winner.

Auto Union Rennlimousin
For the 1935 Avus GP Auto Union entered four cars two of which had streamlined bodywork. The streamliners were driven by Prinz zu Leiningen and newcomer Bernd Rosemeyer both of whom qualified well but failed to finish due to engine problems. Dave's shell is superbly sculpted:

That's it so far. A big THANK YOU to Dave for the shells and consequently for all the fun I've had in building and racing these models.

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2006/09/12 15:20 John,

Those models really are excellent and many thanks for posting the pictures. It is always a pleasure to see well built scale models (especially as I know what you had to work with) Now that I am getting back up to speed with things I will soon be updating the "Interest" part of the site along with loads more pics of cars and the track.

Regards.

Dave

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2006/11/16 22:13 Hello John,

I have an Airfix W154 for sale and I am in contact with someone in Holland that wants to buy it.

What is a fair price to ask?

Kind regards,
Egon

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2006/12/28 22:25 Hi Egon,

My sincere apologies for the delay in replying to your query regarding the Airfix/M.R.R.C. Mercedes W154 body shell. I am still in the relatively early stages of recovering from my heart attack.

I would have thought that if your body shell is a mint, bagged un assembled one that something like 15 to 20 pounds would be realistic. If it is a previously painted and run example then probably 10 pounds is nearer the mark. I am only basing these comments from what I have seen them go for on that well known Internet auction site in the past.

Even if this reply is too late (my apologies again) please do keep visiting the Slot car part of the site as there will be some significant additions happening over the next month or so.

Kindest regards.

Dave

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2007/01/08 12:05 Time for an update. Here are two more slot cars built using examples of Dave's fine shells.

Maserati 250F
This car represents the 1954 model driven by Stirling Moss at the British GP:

The car qualified fourth but unfortunately was destined to retire from the race with transmission failure.

1960 Scarab
Another of my all time favourites, Lance Reventlow's elegant if none too successful Scarab Grand Prix car. This model is based on the car as it appeared on its debut at Monaco.

Thanks once again Dave.

Maserati 250F
This time a 1956 250F modelled to represent Stirling Moss' Glover Trophy winner:

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2007/07/11 12:18 Hi JohnP,

Beautiful work. Can you please tell me how I can buy these great bodyshells? I'm particularly keen on the '54 250F as I saw that car race many times as a boy in New Zealand in the hands of Ross Jenson (who bought it from Moss). Moss won the '56 NZGP with this car. Jenson painted the car a light blue-ish grey with, as I remember, the same white nose as your car.
I've tried to attach a couple of lo-res b/w photos (we couldn't afford colour photos in NZ in the 50's). This is the first time I've everposted on a forum so maybe it worked or...

Cheers... Peter

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2007/07/12 10:39 Thanks for the kind comments Peter and your recollections of the Maserati.

Pity your picture doesn't seem to appear

Regarding the shells, I passed on your comments to Dave so hopefully he will be in touch with you via the website or alternatively you might use the contact link at the top of the page.

Re:Scratchbuilt cars using Dave Jones' shells - 2007/07/12 11:35 Thanks John,

Now that you've taught me where the "contact" button is (I had looked for it.... but missed it), maybe you could give me a clue on posting photos because I completely failed there.

thanks again... Peter
