Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/12 22:00 Thanks David and Graham.

As far as the paint, I always liked the look of John and Alan's tracks so I went with a grey, latex (water based) paint/primer. I taped the rails and with a small foam roller put 2 coats on and have been pleased with the results.

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/15 19:20 Just to report that the Ferguson has rejoined the rest of the entry after Graham's superb re-fettling.
I gave it a fairly gentle 20 laps this evening as I was keen not to add too much mileage to the car and not to put too great a strain on the drivetrain. Even driving it at 9/10ths and getting on and off the throttle very smoothly Al's car still lapped at 4.75 sec - if it wasn't for the car's recent mechanical history I would have given it a bit of a go and I'm sure it would have knocked a big chunk off that time.
Al has produced a very quick, driveable car with good acceleration and brakes, you can carry a lot of speed into the corners knowing that it is so stable and predictable with no vices at all. I can see it finishing very high in the results at Earls Hall Park.
Now all the grid is assembled I will organise the race as soon as possible.

Jay - Thanks for the info on the paint.

David

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/15 21:58 David as long as you keep the gears greased there should be no problem I used a basic l m auto grease cos thas what I had to hand but somthing like molyslip or a similar grafite type grease would be better as it will not get flung off a easily when driven .
give it some stick I d love to see it on the podium

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/16 14:35 Quite agree with Graham - go for it! At this point it should probably be called Al's/Graham's Ferguson.

At this point, I'm already thinking about next year's race, wondering if I can achieve the decent track behavior of this car without the complication of the offset drive shaft. Now, if I use the Slot-It offset gears, I can drop the motor about 1 mm....but how about real 4WD.....It appears to me that the motor is assembled with 4 bent tabs...open those and it should come apart. In most cases, the commutator and armature are simply a press fit on the shaft - carefully press out the old and substitute a longer piece of 1.5mm drill blank (and maybe dial in just a bit of timing advance in the process)....now, where did I put that miniature pry bar?

Off to the catacombs to rouse the dwarfs!

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/17 07:18 The Earls Hall Grand Prix will be held on Sunday 21st September so we'll see then how all the cars get on. I'll do a report and some pictures as soon as I can afterwards.

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/18 14:09 hi grah1, i am flogging on with my project fwd brm, collecting parts and reading all the old copies of "model cars &model roads & racing" concerning fwd. so far it seems that i have to aim for slightly lower ratio front axle. do you reccomend i use a finer pitch set of gears front and back to get a smooth transfer to drive train? any input at this stage would be most helpful. i have un-earthed a set of MRRC drive units i forgot i had. do you soft solder or silver solder bearing in mind the chassis will get a hammering when eventually built .aside looks like you are up for a good result sunday.good luck.peterjon

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/18 19:48 Never been too fond of 4wd slots Ive only built a couple plus the mrrc ones , even on the vast dry sandtex miles of the old accrington track I always built and raced rear wheel drive cars . I can understand the reasoning chris addams gives for different ratios front to rear but I would still bet a good set up rwd wil win most times .
If I was building one I would use slotit gears probably the offset ones to lower the cof g
On the subject of soldering soft soldering is as good as any thing if its done right I havent silver soldered a chassis in years the curret crop of cars we race just arnt as fast as the ones we raced on the comercial tracks so the bumps arnt as heavy,
my moneys on al for a podium this week end

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/19 15:09 hi grah1, thank you for your input, those were the days, on the big tracks with all that santex reducing the finish if you had an off. done a good job on the tyres too.mine would last about three hours at the westcliff endurance events i took part in. how are the boots on the brm holding up after the rounds you,ve run.? i,m getting to grips with the slot it controller seems to be a great bit of kit! and at a sensible price.because the trigger is so light i am having trouble in controlling an enthusiastic digit! i hope you don,t mind too much me waffling on but i feel comfortable chatting to a time served slotter.and this forum is so great, makes me want to plink the keys a little. reguards peterjon.
