Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/08 22:28 Many thanks - you have earned my eternal gratitude - i owe you a very large (your choice) when next we meet.
Can i further impose on you to swap out the motor for one of the ones that i sent with the bits - as I recall, the original went south.

Again - many thanks

Al

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/09 15:50 Al I'll give it a good sorting out and put the new motor in Im confident the chassis could cope with a lot more power than the original motor as when we had it running at johns it cornered exeptionaly well.

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/09 17:16 hi grah1, what a stout effort! now perhapse al,s p.99 will move up the rankings and show its true form.i would like to follow suit and build myself a brm 4 wd. only snag i can see that there is not an available shell and the only motor with a shaft that extends both ends is the euro motor. come back the k,s mk2,alls forgiven.suppose i will have to carve one.what happened to all the steering units? cant find any at all on the web.anyway would it be eligable as it was only used as a mobile test bed.yours peterjon.

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/09 21:11 the scx rally motor has a double shaft and comes in a variety of performances plus its very tunable and can be easily rewound

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/09 21:49 Scale Auto is offering their version of the FF can motor - from the photos, it appears to have enough of a shaft stub extending from the commutator end to allow fitting of a coupling or extension. I have one on order for another (single ended) project and will look more closely when it arrives.

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/10 02:18 Re motors:

Graham - I leave it entirely in your capable hands - you are "on the scene" and know the tracks. The yellow can Scale Auto is rated at 25K RPM - should be OK. My only experience with these motors outside of the All Electronics $0.99 variety is a Scaley "Black" can in a 4CLT using one of Mac's bodies and chassis - it runs very nicely but I had room to use an aluminum "drag" gear so it is running about 5.5:1 As I recall the P99 is 10:13 X 10:13 X 10:32 or, finally 5.4:1. 35K would either be spectacular or calamitous!

You're my Ulenhaut - a development engineer who can drive!!

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/10 02:21 Off topic (a bit) I too have been pondering a real 4WD F1 car and am quietly assembling the plans and photos for the Porsche designed Cisitalia - means a carving job, though.

Re:Round 4 Earls Hall Park - 2008/09/10 07:53 Well the track is now up and running so Paul and I held a practice session last night.

The cars assembeld in the new grand prix paddock at Earls Hall Park.

The support paddock

I thought I would have a go at some "action" photography - here Bryan's BRM races past the pits.

Jim's superb Lola at speed on the back straight.

We decided to have Paul drive all the cars in practice and after a few minutes with each car to get used to their characteristics he did a 10 lap timed run. The times were incredibly close.

1 Graham BRM 4.62sec
2 David Ferrari 4.69
3 Bryan BRM 4.78
4 Bill Porsche 4.84
5 Jay Brabham 4.85
6 Paul Cooper 4.90
7 Alan Lotus 4.90
8 Jim Lola 4.96
9 Alexis Ferrari 4.96
10 Charlie BRM 4.97
11 Dave BRM 4.97
12 Joel Ferrari 4.98
13 Mac Ferrari 4.98
14 John BRP 4.98
15 Al Ferguson No Time

As I've said the times are so close, if I had more sophisticated timing we would perhaps have split some of the cars with a thousandth of a second but this timing in 10ths and hundredths of a second is in keeping with grand prix racing in the 1960s.

The cars have been described in detail previously but a few comments about how they cope with Earls Hall Park.
Graham's BRM is head and shoulders above the rest of the field, it is so stable and consistent.
I'm not sure how my Sharknose managed second fastest time, it does have pretty good brakes and acceleration but the handling is a bit knife edge and prone to tipping - my guess is that it will not keep that pace up in race conditions.
Bryan's BRM goes as well as it looks, a stunning car.
Bill's Porsche is very well balanced and has no vices and felt even quicker than the time suggests.
Jay's Brabham is another great looking car that performs as well as it looks, once again Paul felt the car was quicker than the time suggests but with the times so close it is only fractions that we're talking about.
Paul's Cooper felt very much at home at Earls Hall Park and felt stable and consistent.
Alan's Lotus seemed quicker and is another very predictable performer, perhaps just a touch tail happy which maybe costs it a bit of time.
Jim's Lola drives so smoothly and predictably but on the night thhe car suddenly suffered a lack of grip. It only happened to this car so it can't have been track conditions, maybe there is something about these set of tyres, I'll try another set before the race to see if that helps.
Alexis' Ferrari has good brakes and really got round the circuit very well.
Charli's BRM has good grip and is very stable, a bit surprising it was at this end of the times.
John's BRP really suffered with a lack of brakes but is a lovely car to drive.

I'll practice Al's car when it returns from the wilds of Lancashire.

Anyway that's enough from me, I better get off to work.
David
