Re:Testing ahead of Round Two - 2008/08/04 03:10 I am really quite embarrassed by these failures - I thought that with 100+ laps of testing after a series of earlier misadventures I had sorted things out.

The pinion is, indeed, 11T, 64DP - it is soldered to the shaft with a 1.5 mm ID, 2.0 MM OD sleeve intervening. It is (supposedly) a hardened steel pinion and I have never had one strip before.

At least it is the motor pinion that has gone. The shaft pinion is very much harder to replace. The motor is fixed with standard metric cap screws and is easily removed to refit the pinion.

As a side note, I use only solder-on pinions on these motors. Unlike the Scaley version, the shaft does not extend through the commutator end so there is no way to apply a counter force while pressing on a pinion. I tried it once and instantly destroyed the plastic end bell.

Thanks again and best regards

Al

Re:Testing ahead of Round Two - 2008/08/04 09:31 Thanks so much John for all the time and trouble you've gone to with the report and photography on your test sessions. It is hard to predict a winner looking at the times and I can't wait for the race.
Good luck in preparing Al's car...

David

Re:Testing ahead of Round Two - 2008/08/04 12:25 Bad luck Al, but if anyone can sort it im sure Graham and John will do
there utmost.
Having looked at your car{pictures} im wondering if you may be onto
something here, 4x4, extra weight, this may be the way to go with
these smaller cars.
Sadly Bill and i wont be able to get our cars to the line for this round.
we both attended the Netley classic meeting over the weekend,
Bill suffered some problem with the Porsche,s chassis and cant get
it there on time, i have also suffered motor failure on the same day.
Not having another motor or sleeving and the date so close its a DNS
for both of us, sorry guys.
Could you let Bill and i know where the next round is to be held so we can
sort things and get them posted to where ever.
Good luck with your race/round.
Mac

Re:Testing ahead of Round Two - 2008/08/05 06:14 Another package will be dispatched tomorrow - obviously too late for the current meet but it will be on hand if anyone has the time, patience and good will to have another go at this "kit car" that I have entered.

It contains:

motor with sleeved 11t 64 DP pinion installed

new crown gear with two 1-72 grub screws and enough clearance to fit a wrench easily*

Instructions for removing the rear axle to replace the crown gear (it has a stopper sleeve on one side and will only come out one way - to the right.

A couple of spare motors as my gift to anyone who wants to play with one.

EM

* the soldered-in hub on this one is better made so there is less axial run-out and the whole gear train should be a bit smoother.

Re:Testing ahead of Round Two - 2008/08/07 20:53 Hi Al

Dave still seems to be having problems posting here but asked me to let you know that your spares have arrived safely.

Kind regards
John
