Re:Hear Yea! Hear Yea! Proxy Round 1 Announcement - 2008/07/20 16:42
Hi Bill:
It is, in a way, exactly that - a solution looking for a problem. As it turns out, although the reversed rear bracket does not intrude into the cockpit, the (very small) crown gear does, necessitating a bit of "relief" ground into the driver's butt. The pinion chain at the motor end also extends into the front of the cockpit so I do not have quite the open space I wanted. I could have gained a bit by machining the pinions down to perhaps 2 mm wide but, by the time I could see the need, the assembly, which was not trivial, had gone too far. (The motor is about as far forward as it can be, allowing space for assembly and a body mount between the motor and the front suspension)
This said, it did have three useful results: Ii was partly motivated by a "can it be done?" impulse and yes, it works (how well we shall see). I am satisfied that the spur chain offers no more load than a less-than-perfectly aligned flex coupling and I do not have a motor sitting in the cockpit which, with the low cut on the right side, would have been difficult to mask.
One of the interesting challenges arose because there are a lot of discrepancies among the two sets of plans and the various photos that I have. I have tried to build it as it was originally.
