GOT ME BRM BACK - 2008/03/01 21:32 Well finaly I got my BRM back having been safley stored by Mac till I returned to the UK ,the thing that surprised me was the tyre wear ,I chose AB urathanes soft compound for this car and they were nearly down to the rims , I wonder how the ortman runners faired in comparison . Other than that the car was just as it was sent which shows how good the driving has been on this event .
From a personal point of view the car was a disaster and didnt perform any where near its early tests at pendle suggested so its back to the drawing board with this one .The main problem is the rigidity of the chassis I'll continue to dvelope this car for a while simply because Ilike the shell and Im sure I can rectify the problems .As for using the penelope pitlane chassis again in another car ,sorry its not for me I'll stick to building my own in future .
Cheers
Graham

Re:GOT ME BRM BACK - 2008/03/02 00:29 I used Ortmanns on my Cooper, they were brand new and not even trued up at the start of the proxy series. I didn't measure them when I got the car back but I reckon they had worn about 2mm.
As with your BRM Graham, my car had very little serious damage it just looks a bit secondhand.
I haven't thought too much about whether to persevere with the same car for the next series or whether to build a fresh car from my pile of nice new Dave Jones F1 bodyshells!

Re:GOT ME BRM BACK - 2008/03/02 09:30 Also just got my Lotus back, thanks to Mac, my Ortmans don't seem to have worn very much at all, but i'm not surprised as most of my Home Ortman equiped cars show very little signs of wear.

My car did prove a little "jittery" to drive so I think a new car will be required, and as David says..there are all those beautiful DJ bodies to try out!.

On Grahams point about the PP chassis, I have two of them and I haven't got either to perform as I hoped they would, so I think I'll stick to my own. They do seem to perform well on the Wovles track, so somebody must be able to get them to work, I guess I'm not doing something right.

Regards

Alan

Re:GOT ME BRM BACK - 2008/03/02 14:20 On the tyre front, i found out why the results
fell away as the event progressed.
the first race at Daves place, the car was on the pace,
next meeting not so good, towards the end it had
become an embarrassment.
It was shod with NSR tyres which had been treated
for the first race, but going on its rounds and not having
the tyres retreated they got harder and harder untill
the thing was undrivable.
It took second place at the wolves meeting, so the basic
car is sound.
A view of the Pitlane chassis, it dose the job if you want
to trundle a car around but for out and out racing its not
up to the job, it needs so much work to get it to peform
one would be better building from scratch.
As for another event, i would prefar to stick with 1-1/2
ltr cars, as has been seen there,s some good looking stuff
to be raced.
cheers

Re:GOT ME BRM BACK - 2008/03/04 14:05 Ive removed the scaley silver can and replaced it with an allelectronics 70cent ff motor , the car feels much more driveable the power goes onto the track now and the car is consistant . To install this into the pp chassis I had to remove the rear motor mount and cut about 3/16th of thr chssis way to alow the motor to sit further back as thearmature shaft is shorter , this also made it possible for me to remove most of the lead from the car ,Ive just a very small bit behind the guide .
If we were to run this class again I would say this is an ideal "control" motor and would kee the cost way down . Out of intrest my early bird lotus ran allday in practice with one of these motors and was on the pace of the mid feild cars Changing to the moto gp motor for race day put it on the pace of the winners but made it difficult to be consistant due to the narrow track of the car while I could bang a few 7.7s 7.8s it was difficult to do it every time but with the slower motor the lap times were very consistant and on a shorter track I would have chosen this set up .
